This has allowed us to look critically at how software can be used to create eTextbooks that help students study, learn, and ultimately achieve their academic goals!We provide digital content from the world’s leading academic publishers, consumer trade publishers, self-publishers and a variety of other content creators. Our close partnerships with publishers and college bookstores have positioned RedShelf to bring affordable digital course materials to students and professors like you across the country.Our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) technology is accessible on any web-browser based device with no requirement to use a dedicated reader or download an application. With familiar tools such as bookmarking, highlighting, and note-taking, our eTextbook software allows students to study and learn like they would with paper. Our software also allows for digital advances, such as keyword search, dictionary look-up, and 24/7 access from nearly any device.

Job Summary

RedShelf has grown over 400% YOY for the last 6 years and need development help. We have a team of 12 developers now and need to expand the team to fulfill on some of the amazing opportunities we have coming up in 2017. Our main priority is to help transition learning materials like textbooks from the current print products into what they can be, much evolved etextbooks.

We're looking for a DevOps Engineer to help us respond to growing market demand for our products. The DevOps Engineer will participate in hands-on billing of monthly customer invoices while managing a small billing team. Specifically, this individual will improve day-to-day operations of the engineering team as well as the automation, deployment and health of the production environment.

As Developer, you’ll get to learn and work on the latest technologies being adopted in the HTML5 specification while also having the ability to have a real impact on the future of our products.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

  • In line with DevOps philosophy, fully own applications from design to operations
  • Design and implement systems for deployment and infrastructure
  • Participate in the agile planning (long term and short term) process for all work
  • Work with the rest of software development team to ship code, maintain infrastructure
  • Research and deploy best software and hardware to make others more productive and our applications at top performance
  • Build, deploy, monitor and troubleshoot as needed
  • Be vigilant and aware of new security threats. Make recommendation and implement new security technologies and policies
  • Monitoring resource utilization, plan for growth. Capacity planning
  • Advise developers on schema changes, optimize performance
  • Production support

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Sciences, Engineering or field equivalent
  • Three (3) years of experience within and working via the software industry
  • Three (3) years of experience within a fast-moving, web-oriented development environment
  • The ability to learn new computer languages and Open Source systems quickly
  • Flexible on design and development decisions
  • Experience with Agile or Scrum methodology
  • Outstanding performance tuning and troubleshooting skills required
  • History of working independently with little direction
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders including senior leadership
  • Track record of balancing multiple priorities simultaneously with the ability to adapt to the changing needs of the business while meeting deadlines

Technology Requirements:

  • One plus (1+) years of experience working with Python
  • Three plus (3+) years of experience working specifically in a DevOps role
  • Experience using SaltStack or other configuration management frameworks is accepted
  • Experience deploying and managing services with Docker
  • Experience managing a SQL Database in a high-availability configuration, preferably Postgresql
  • Demonstrated experience in deploying and managing a continuous integration environment

Other Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Experience with RabbitMQ, ElasticSearch, NoSQL, and Redis
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the advances in higher educational software, course materials, and digital publishing
  • Background and/or experience in educational technology and/or publishing
  • Comfort and/or experience in a startup environment
